The Earthseed series, which began with Parable of the Sower and continues in Parable of the Talents, tells the story of the genesis of a simple, humanist religion - Earthseed - in a dystopian near-future Earth. Her books tend to focus on the nature of difference, and she has written some of the most convincing portrayals of truly alien life forms in science fiction. She is now regarded as one of the best writers in the business. As one of the first African-American science fiction writers, and indeed one of a few women breaking the formidable SF gender barrier, she brought a fresh new voice to the genre.
